GDS

A worldwide computerized reservation network used by travel agents and corporations to book hotel rooms, flights, and other travel products.

Definition

A Global Distribution System (GDS) is a centralized reservation platform that connects travel service providers (hotels, airlines, car rental companies) with travel agents and corporate booking tools worldwide. The three major GDS networks are Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport (which includes Galileo and Worldspan). Hotels connect to GDS networks to make their inventory available to thousands of travel agents and corporate travel managers who use these systems daily to book travel.

Why It Matters

The GDS remains a vital distribution channel, particularly for hotels targeting business travelers and corporate accounts. Corporate travel programs and travel management companies (TMCs) rely heavily on GDS for booking. GDS bookings often command higher average daily rates and longer stays compared to leisure OTA bookings. For hotels in business-heavy markets, a strong GDS presence can drive significant, high-value revenue.

Best Practices

  • 1Keep your GDS profile up to date with accurate descriptions and amenities
  • 2Load competitive corporate and negotiated rates into the GDS
  • 3Participate in GDS marketing programs and preferred hotel programs
  • 4Monitor GDS booking performance and adjust strategy accordingly
  • 5Ensure your rate strategy aligns across GDS and other channels
